Obamacare Could Add Jobs

January 19th, 2011

The Republicans claim the Obama health care law will cost jobs, but it actually opens jobs, as some people decide to work less or retire. Sounds like a job-starter to me.

Don’t Be A ‘Job Donor’

January 31st, 2010

Here’s one way to avoid being a ‘Job Donor’:

- Wear a seat belt.

For every fatal accident that has somebody thrown from the vehicle, the news story says, “was not wearing a seat belt”.  So buckle up! Here are some good reasons to wear a seat belt:

Wow – That’s A Stupid (Staples) Ad!

January 19th, 2010

The latest Staples ad, with some idiot looking at every item and shouting, “Wow – that’s a low price!”, is right at the top of my must-mute list.  It could possibly be worse than everything Billy Mays ever did.  And there isn’t even a Staples store in my area to complain to!

Finally Saw “Avatar” – Amazing!

January 19th, 2010

As I watched the beautifully immersive experience of seeing Avatar in 3D, certain movie parallels and themes came to mind:
- Surrogates (the recent Bruce Willis movie)
- Lawrence Of Arabia
- Dances With Wolves
- Jurassic Park
- Vietnam war
- Starship Troopers
- Return Of The Jedi
- Aliens
- Pocahontas (read about on web)
- Ferngully (read about on web)
- environmentalism
- metaphysics

So the story wasn’t unique, but the presentation sure was.  The whole movie is a special effects experience, with bits of live actors and real sets thrown in along the way.   It all works, though.  Once again, James Cameron delivers the goods.  The story is well-told, and the audience feels for the characters.  Compare this to the movie 2012, where the special effects were great, but the story and characters were almost laughable.

I loved seeing Coraline in 3D and now other audiences will see what the next level of filmmaking is.  One scene in Avatar stood out: a helicopter in flight, with the reflection of the clouds in the canopy looking distant, just like in real life.  3D is more than a gimmick, it enhances the movie experience, if properly used.

Whew! Wordpress Updated

January 17th, 2010

Despite how easy the Wordpress documentation made it sound, it took me a couple of hours to upgrade to the latest version of their software.  Once I had it installed, the first message I got was that it didn’t support MySQL 4.0, so I had to create a new database and load my data into that.  That took at least an hour to figure out.  But now I’m back online, all is working, and I didn’t lose anything.  Yay!

Great “Better Off Ted” Line

January 8th, 2010

Linda:  I don’t want to lose this job. What am I supposed to do, go back to Wisconsin and work in the cheese mine? After I made that big speech, threw down my cheese shovel, and stormed out?

Happy New Year 2010 (I Hope)!!

January 1st, 2010

Hard to believe a whole decade of 200x years has passed.  I’d say ‘good riddance’ to 2009, but I don’t know that 2010 will be any better.  There’s a lot of economic crapola still to come.  Unemployed people who survived 2009 might not make it through 2010, houses with teaser rates from a few years ago will reset, and more businesses will fail.

Weather Channel Humor

December 25th, 2009

I don’t think the Weather Channel planned this to be funny, but it sure was.
